![]() His relative lack of presence can be a little strange, but in truth he’s never been the world’s strongest rapper, and the album mostly benefits from the plethora of guest stars, who impress to a man – Lamar in particular, who appears on several of the album’s tracks, uses his verses to cement his status as one of America’s finest MCs. ![]() There’s a blizzard of guest stars, from relative unknowns like King Mez and Justus to veterans like Ice Cube and, yes, Slim Shady himself Dre himself often appears on only one verse per track. That said, for a Dr Dre album Compton doesn’t always feature a lot of Dr Dre. ‘I just bought California,’ he booms, before going on to declare that ‘I was getting money ‘fore the internet/still got Eminem checks I ain’t opened yet.’ Dre’s always had a great line in bravado and he doesn’t disappoint here. A newsreel announcer in the album’s Intro details Compton’s fall into crime and poverty, before jumping into Talk About It, a potted biography of Dre’s rise from street hustler to billionaire legend. As the name suggests, Compton is a record steeped in the history and atmosphere of a city famous for both its high murder rate and its contribution to hip-hop culture. The album was even announced on Apple Music’s radio channel.īut if cold commercial interests have dictated the way the album has been released, the album itself does not feel compromised. There’s the fact that its release was seemingly timed to coincide with the release of NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton, and that it can only be streamed via Apple Music, the new owners of Beats. That said, there’s more than a hint of a suspicion that Compton is as much a marketing opportunity as a work of art. You’d have been forgiven for thinking, up until the surprise announcement of Compton a few weeks back, that these days Dre was a businessman first and a rapper second. Along the way an album, Detox, was promoted and then scrapped before release. Since then, making music has taken a backseat to Dre’s business interests, whether it be producing megastars like Eminem and Kendrick Lamar or making a fortune off his Beats headphones (the sale of which to Apple made him a near-billionaire). It’s been 16 years since the release of Dr Dre’s second, classic album The Chronic 2001 (itself separated from its predecessor The Chronic by a not-insignificant seven years). Before I get lost with gettin’ off.”Īzalea responded to Eminem’s verse, telling her followers: “I’m bored of the old men threatening young women as entertainment trend and much more interested in the young women getting $ trend. If there’s one thing you can say about Andre Young, it’s that the man doesn’t like to be rushed. You don’t wanna blow that rape whistle on me. ![]() The lyrics include: “So what’s it gon’ be? Put that shit away, Iggy. In a song called Vegas, released in 2014, he seems to be rapping about raping Iggy Azalea. Damn, Em you gotta get better than this.Īnother said: “As good as the line was … Eminem didn’t need to include that ‘rape’ line especially as passionately as he said it.”Įminem has previous when it comes to lyrics that downplay rape. One Twitter user wrote: “I love Eminem, but that rape line in Medicine Man made me cringe. Lyrics like these contribute to a conducive context for sexual violence.”Įminem was also widely lambasted for the lyrics on social media. “When we minimise, celebrate, glorify or condone men’s violence against women, we are amplifying the conditions in which it can occur.
